Brief Description of Courses Per Semester
Semester I
General Chemistry / Kimia Umum
Biology / Biologi
2 credits Prerequisite(s): None This course discusses the basic principles of Biology to support other courses at the UPH-Food Technology Study Program. The scope of the discussion includes: Introduction, biological development, basic concepts of life, life chemistry, cellular structure and function, organelle and cross-membrane transport, cell reproduction, metabolism, structure and function of basic tissues in animals and plants, nutrition, food digestion, and blood circulation, reproduction in animals, reproduction in gymnosperms and angiosperms, Mendel genetics, chromosomes and genetic diseases, molecular genetics, biotechnology and ecology. Physics / Fisika 4 credits Prerequisite(s): None The course includes concepts of kinematics and dynamics on particle and rigid body motion in one dimension and two dimensions, concepts of temperature and heat, thermal expansion, first and second laws of thermodynamics. The course also includes the concepts of vibration and waves in the propagation and interference of sound waves and acoustic characterization; concepts of electricity in electric current, energy, power, and the effect of electric current; concepts of electricity and magnetism in the phenomenon of electromagnetism, alternating current; concepts of geometrical optics in reflection and rarefaction of rays; concepts of waves in interference, diffraction and polarization of light, which are carried out both in class and laboratory.
Mathematics / Matematika
3 credits Prerequisite(s): None The course is a basic introduction to mathematics on logic, vector, operation on matrix, determinant and inverses, solution of linear equation, set theory, permutation and combination, real numbers, function and basic introduction to function and graphs, derivatives of various functions and their application, system of linear equations, Gaussian elimination; matrices and matrix operation; inverses; rules of matrix arithmetic elementary matrices and a method of finding a diagonal, triangular and symmetric matrices; determinants including its function, its evaluating procedure and properties; and general vector spaces. Food Commodity Science / Pengetahuan Bahan Pangan 2 credits Prerequisite(s): None The course provides the basic knowledge of physical & biological characteristics of food materials & chemical composition of animal & plant origin.
General English
2 credits Prerequisite(s): None This course teaches students how to comprehend reading texts in English more effectively, and how to express their idea in a written form systematically, coherently and convincingly.
Leadership / Kepemimpinan 2 credits Prerequisite(s): None This course teaches transformational servant leadership the same as the vision of UPH. This course equips students to be leaders that drive social change through the diversity as well as a professional foundation in the Food and Technology industry. The course will also address the leadership model that serves transformation by first starting from the Christian world's insight into leadership and the three pillars of Christian leadership: the involved Christian faith, proactive citizenship, and social entrepreneurship (specifically in the industrial world construction service).
Psychology: Self-Awareness / Psikologi: Pengenalan Diri
2 credits Prerequisite(s): None This course must be taken by every UPH student in all study program, as it aims to help students understand their existence as a human (human being) intact, especially from a psychological point of view, according to the 'CFRC' (Creation-Fall-Redemption-Consummation). Through this course, students understand human existence from a theological and psychological point of view. From a theological point of view, human as 'The Fallen Image Bearer' has experienced 'total damage' so that they are constrained in understanding themselves as they should. Such a condition creates a variety of 'psychological barriers' that impede the human process of understanding itself as a whole. Thus, students are expected to understand their 'self-understanding' more openly, honestly, deeply, and objectively, as capital in the process of self-development/character development. Furthermore, students are also helped to take the first step in dealing with and overcoming various 'psychological barriers', formulating a personal strategy formula, in order to develop personal qualities and character, toward dynamic growth as a whole person.
